Editor Georgie Abay on Christmas decorating ideas (and gorgeous gifts from Marks & Spencer)

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas and I couldn’t be more excited. Ever since I became a mother, I feel like I’ve rediscovered the joy of Christmas. It’s wonderful seeing it through my children’s eyes, it’s almost as if I’m a child again...

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we talk about Santa daily. We talk about what the reindeers would like to eat. We’ve already decided on carrots, cookies and milk. As a child, I still remember leaving food out for the reindeers and cookies and milk for Santa. I think we even left him a beer. In the morning, I delighted in seeing that they’d eaten what we’d left.

With Christmas just around the corner, we’ve just decorated the front of our house with shooting silver stars. And the tree has gone up and is covered in little red baubles. It’s the tree part I love the most. I remember decorating our trees as a child and I know the girls will remember it when they look back on their childhood.

Life can be so magical when you’re a child. I remember one Christmas Eve standing on our deck looking up at the sky. It was one of those balmy summer nights and the sky was filled with stars. We were convinced we could see Santa and his reindeers in the sky. We couldn’t of course, but our imaginations lead us to believe he was right there above us delivering presents to children all over the world.  I also remember Christmas morning, opening presents in our pyjamas and eating chocolate almonds for breakfast.

Perhaps more than anything, I love that Christmas makes me stop and take a moment to remember how important family is. We’re in such a mad rush most of the year and I barely get a chance to come up for air, but at Christmas, it’s all about family.

So to give you a little inspiration, here’s how we’ve decorated our tree this year and some of our favourite gifts available at Marks & Spencer. I’m in love with the new Marie-Chantal for Marks & Spencer collection and while it might be a little hot for this red coat in Australia, I can’t wait to pull it out for Arabella next winter. There’s everything from adorable children’s partywear (how cute are these sparkly velvet shoes) to decorations to cards to gifts – it’s your one-stop shop this Christmas. Plus, if you spend over $100, you’ll get free tracked shipping. Happy shopping and enjoy decorating your tree.
