Our editor Georgie Abay on the knits to buy now

As autumn leaves begin the fall, it just happens. Suddenly, all you want to wear is knits. Instead of scrolling through pages and pages of summer dresses late at night, you’ll find yourself looking at stylish sweaters. But here’s the thing – knits are just like dresses. There’s so many to choose from and certain knits work for certain occasions...

Take the hoodie knit. Ideal for casual wear, but not really to be worn unless you’re with the kids or it’s the weekend. For work, I love the fine knit or the fashion knit. Then there’s the ‘coatigan’ (a made-up word – Google it and you’ll be told it’s a long cardigan for women, made of thick yarn and designed to be worn as a coat), the cable knit, the bateau knit… I could go on and on. But I won’t. You’re time-poor. I get it.

So here’s what I have done. I’ve edited down my top knits of the season. I love each and every one of them (I know you’re not supposed to have favourites so I love them all equally). They’ll take you through the cooler months and you’re sure to reach for them next winter too.

So ready to get cozy? Here we go.

The turtleneck

From Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe, the turtleneck is an enduring fashion classic. So if you do one thing with your wardrobe this winter, add a turtleneck knit to the mix. My pick? This heavenly cream chunky wool jumper from Country Road. For a more polished look, go for a slim fit turtleneck jumper.

The grey sweater

Everyone needs a plethora of grey knits in their closet. They’re on high rotation in mine. This fuzzy knit by Witchery is super soft and the slouchy deep v style gives off an understated, relaxed vibe.  Just add jeans and you’re good to go.

The cable knit

I love cable knits. Firstly, they’re usually lovely and thick and feel heavenly to wear as the weather gets cooler. Secondly, they’re so classic. They’ll never date so buy as many of them as you like. I love this longer knit – so flattering and looks great over leather pants.

Want more? Here's my other favourites...

The coatigan

See above. Fashion people love to invent new words to name things. Enter the ‘coatigan’, which is a cardigan/coat and is so cozy you’ll want to wear it all winter long. It’s also a socially acceptable robe which you can wear everywhere. Oh and ideal if you’re breastfeeding.

The hoodie

Ah, the hoodie. Such a brilliant piece of clothing. So comfy, cozy and remarkably, still so cool. Wear with jeans or gym pants and your mum-on-to-go outfit is complete.

The fine knit

The fine knit is perfect for wearing with stylish skirts. Just make sure you get a good T-shirt bra. There’s nothing worse than ruining the fine knit with the wrong bra. I love a fine knit for work or if I’m going out for the evening. Just add a coat or blazer to finish the look.

The fashion knit

We all need a few fashion knits. I can’t promise you’ll want to bring them out next winter, but they’re a lot of fun to wear now. It’s all about the bell-sleeved or frill-sleeved knit this season so stock up.

The bateau knit

When it comes to your wardrobe, you can never have enough stripes. Never! At the beginning of each season, it doesn’t hurt refreshing some of your striped knits.
