India Hicks is one of those impossibly chic women whose style and charm leaves a lasting impression...
The model, British aristocrat and entrepreneur, who resides in the Bahamas on the remote Harbour Island, is the daughter of David Hicks, a famed British interior designer and Lady Pamela Mountbatten, who was once lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. Her godfather is Prince Charles and she was a one-time bridesmaid to Princess Diana. She’s also the mother of five children and founder of a lifestyle brand India Hicks London-Harbour Island, which offers everything from accessories to jewelry to beauty products and is sold through networks of entrepreneurial women. Hicks says her style is inspired by her traditional British past and her vibrant Caribbean present, mixed up with her family’s own eccentricities. She lives with her partner of 20 years, David Flint Wood, their five children and a handful of animals including dogs, cats, love-birds and a tortoise. Photographer and friend of Hicks, Sarah Wood, visited the ever-elegant island-dwelling creative at her home and captured these spectacular images while we caught up with Hicks to talk motherhood and life in the Bahamas…. Life as a mother of five children is…
The most magnificent gift in the world and leaves me sleepless most nights with worry.
The secret to a happy relationship is...
I’ve been with the same person for 20 happy years and our relationship is based on kindness humour and respect.
Motherhood has taught me…
That I am last on the list, and that’s exactly as it should be.
The most exciting moment of my career was…
Realising that other women really did want to partner with me in my direct sales business, and that together we could create something significant.
My time management secrets are…
Being the granddaughter of an Admiral who was also chief of combined operations, I inherited a bit of his efficiency.
Life in the Bahamas is…
More challenging than people imagine, we don’t have a doctor, dentist or vet.
Today I’m wearing…
David’s boxer shorts, Birkenstocks and an oversized sweater, I really hope no one see’s me.
The last meal I ate was…
My daughter’s left over boiled egg and soldiers.
My last big fashion purchase was…
Clearly not significant because I can’t even remember what it might have been.
Love is...
The most important thing of all.
Happiness is...
A really riotous evening of Charades.
I relax by...
Having a hot bath whilst my fat Dachshund snores on the tiles.
I get stressed when...
I think I am going to miss a flight, which happens too often.
My mother taught me...
To never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
How beautiful, what a dream! Sarah did such a great job capturing this. Love to see some questions about exercise and eating too!
Thanks so much for your comment Kate! We will make sure to add some questions about exercise and eating – we’re curious too! xx
