How does the glamorous editor-in-chief of Harper's BAZAAR Arabia magazine get out the door? Dubai-based Louise Nichol shares her morning routine with us...

How do you start your day?
My alarm goes off at 5.30am so I can get in a gym session before my daughter Leo wakes up. Since becoming a mummy I have started going to sleep ridiculously early (like 8pm early) so waking up before dawn is a cinch.

Do you prefer dawn or dusk?
Definitely morning. I can barely function after 4pm. I put Leo into her cot at 6pm and as my husband works in Saudi Arabia during the week I am often in bed (with my Kindle and a nutritionally questionable dinner) by 6.30pm. So rock ‘n’ roll.

Can you talk us through your morning beauty regime?
It all depends on whether I have meetings or not. If not, I am super low maintenance. Hair in a ponytail, Nivea body moisturiser slathered on, Giorgio Armani Maestro eraser concealer, Guerlain Terracotta Joli Teint foundation, quick eyelash curl and a sweep of Nars Orgasm blusher. When I need to make an effort I’ll wash my hair with Kerastase strengthening products and, to my basic make-up routine, I’ll add primer (Laura Mercier), liquid eyeliner (YSL), mascara base (Shiseido), mascara (Dior Show), Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine in Aventure and switch up to Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation.

Do you exercise in the morning?
Exercise is crucial for my sanity. I do CrossFit-style workouts with my personal trainer Marlene Bunston four or five times a week. Our early morning chats are as good for the soul as sweating is for the body. I’ll confess, sometimes there’s significantly more chatting than sweating. Also, I have a weekly Olympic weightlifting class and try to run once a week.

Do you plan your outfit the night before?
I absolutely wish I did but I am so not that person. I open the cupboard and grab whatever I see. A Chanel blazer, Chloe cami, J Brand Maria jeans and Dior pointy pumps is my failsafe go-to.

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
I get back from the gym at 7am, give Leo her breakfast, shower and am out of the house by 7.45am. It’s not exactly leisurely, but I have spare shoes and make-up stashed in the office for emergencies. Should I admit that I once wore a mismatched pair of shoes to the office?

What do you eat for breakfast?
I recently did a food intolerance test, which told me I am hyper-intolerant to eggs. Massive blow as I used to take hard boiled eggs to work for breakfast. In an ideal world I’d eat some form of protein and nuts after working out, but I’m pregnant and really struggling to eat meat, so I’m more likely to have some full fat Greek yoghurt drizzled with maple syrup over berries.

Coffee, tea or a green smoothie?
English breakfast tea with an Earl Grey dunk and a generous splash of full fat cow’s milk. I gave up dairy for all of three weeks but my love of cheese broke me. My green smoothie habit is sporadic at best; our poor Vitamix hasn’t seen much action for months.
