The Tale Of Brenda & Milla Briand
For a lot of mothers, having a child makes you rethink your career. Whether its finding a new career path that's more flexible with your role as a mother or taking time out to fully immerse yourself in this new experience, motherhood means change. For New Zealand born, Sydney-based Brenda Briand, becoming a mother meant she could focus on building her own accessories brand Benah at home while caring for her newborn daughter Milla.
Benah launched back in 2009, with the aim of creating high-end luxury accessories with an understated aesthetic. It has since expanded from scarves into handbags, leather accessories and cashmere pieces. Briand has also just returned from New York, where she launched a collection of bags in collaboration with fashion designer Karen Walker.
Since she first became a mother - over three and a half years ago - Briand says she's learnt to relax. Im more relaxed now that I've had a baby, the opposite effect of what I assumed it would be. Beforehand, I was working part time for someone else, I was doing my own business on the side and my husband [director, writer and photographer] Ben was travelling a lot. I was working my way into the night. When Milla came along, I just had to stop and pull back.
On her daughters style, she says: Dressing Milla is one of the best things ever. Her style is totally schizophrenic. My style has become a bit more outrageous as well because I have so much fun getting her clothes. I buy so many of them from ebay and thrift stores. Shes getting to the point now where she will dictate what she wears. She has a more is more philosophy."
